SLDSA Statement on DHS Cancelling ICE Warehouse Plans

This Week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it is abandoning its intention to build a detention facility in a warehouse on Salt Lake City’s west side. This partial victory belongs not to politicians grandstanding in the courts but to the tireless mass organizing of Salt Lakers and working people nationwide. From the activists who showed up week after week to protest at the site of the planned concentration camp, to the citizens who put pressure on elected officials to get creative when opposing this facility, to the workers who refused to build DHS’s brutal machinery.

While we are under no illusions that the abandonment of one cog in the mass deportation machine will end ICE terror, we nevertheless celebrate this as a win and commit ourselves to continuing the fight. We must work to abolish ICE and DHS altogether. This starts by forcing cities like Riverton to cut their 287(g) contracts, the current campaign by our Immigrant Solidarity Working Group. If you, like us, believe that the only way to grind the gears of deportation to a halt is to build working class power, we invite you to join Salt Lake DSA and organize with us.
